In the dining room at the Tora's Inn, the Hunters' reunion was in full swing, with laughter and conversations filling the air. Brighid felt a sense of brotherliness, enjoying these rare moments of togetherness. As she sipped her drink, she noticed Rex glancing at her from across the room. At first, she thought nothing of it, attributing his gaze to a casual look. But when she caught him looking again, with a lingering gaze that seemed to search her eyes, Brighid felt a flicker of curiosity and her heart skipped a beat.
She tried to dismiss the feeling, and continued to drink with Morag for a while, trying not to turn in his direction, but at some point she forgot and turned again and her eyes met again. Rex's glance was unmistakable, his eyes filled with an intensity she couldn't quite decipher. It was as if he was trying to communicate something, a silent message meant only for her. Her cheeks warmed, and she felt a flutter in her chest, a mix of confusion and something else she couldn't name. Deciding it was time to address the situation, she made a subtle gesture motioned for him to follow her.
Brighid apologized to Morag and other hunters for a moment, and then she met Rex halfway. They slipped away from the crowded room, seeking a quieter space.
As they moved through the tavern, Brighid's pulse quickened. The anticipation of the conversation ahead made her uneasy. They found a dimly lit hallway, the noise of the tavern fading into a soft background hum. The space felt more intimate, the shadows creating a sense of isolation from the rest of the world.
"Rex," Brighid began, closing her arms as usual when she has a serious conversation. Her voice was calm but tinged with curiosity and a hint of nervousness, "why were you staring at me like that? Is something wrong?"
Rex hesitated, in the dim light. Brighid felt a rush of anxiety.. Had she done something to upset him? Was there something important he needed to say? The uncertainty made her feel vulnerable, a sensation she was not accustomed to.
The silence stretched between them, and Brighid's confusion deepened. The intensity of Rex's gaze was unsettling, and she struggled to understand why it affected her so much. Her heart beat faster, a cocktail of emotions swirling inside her. She felt a tight knot forming in her chest. "Please, Rex," she said, her voice soft but insistent, "if something's bothering you, you can tell me. Did I do something wrong on our last mission? What's going on?" She held her breath, waiting for him to break the silence, the uncertainty almost too much to bear.
“Rex, I need an answer, what’s wr…?” but she didn’t finish the phrase.
Before she could fully process her thoughts, Rex leaned in, his lips meeting hers with surprising boldness. Brighid’s eyes widened, and her mind raced to catch up with the sudden change. The kiss left her breathless, her heart pounding furiously. She was overwhelmed by a whirlwind of confusion, surprise, and a strange thrill. Instinctively, she pushed him away, her back hitting the wall with a soft thud.
Her hand flew to her mouth, her fingers trembling as they touched her lips. She looked at Rex, her eyes wide with shock and confusion. She had never imagined him acting like that, and her mind struggled to understand.
"What are you doing?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper, tinged with disbelief and vulnerability.
Rex, looking remorseful, reached for her wrists, his touch gentle but firm. Brighid's heart raced even faster, her breath catching. The silence between them was thick with unspoken feelings. "I'm sorry, Brighid. I couldn't help it," he murmured, leaning in again.
Brighid’s emotions were a jumble—blushing with embarrassment and something warmer and confusing. He then kissed her again.
She hesitated, but it was only briefly before closing her eyes and returning the kiss. The moment was softer, filled with a quiet intensity that left her feeling both overwhelmed and strangely at peace. It seemed wrong but not at the same time.
As the kiss ended, leaving a lingering sensation in the air, Brighid pulled away, her eyes lowered. She felt a complex mix of emotions—surprise, confusion, and an unexpected warmth that made her heart ache. She took a deep breath to steady herself, then pushed him away once more, but this time it was gentler, a soft gesture of retreat.
We should go back," she said softly, her voice tinged with uncertainty. "The others will wonder where we are."
Feeling a surge of confusion and wanting to escape the charged atmosphere, Brighid turned to leave, her movements quick. But before she could take a single step, Rex reached out and grabbed her wrist, halting her. The suddenness made her pause, and she turned to face him.
They stood in silence. Rex's grip was firm but gentle, as if he was reluctant to let go. Breaking the silence, Rex spoke, his voice low and steady. "Brighid," he said, "would you come to my room at the inn? We need to talk... in private." His words lingered, suggesting a deeper conversation that they both seemed to need.
Brighid stood there, processing Rex’s invitation. The tension between them was thick, making the moment feel both significant and uncertain. Gently, she removed his hand from her wrist, her touch lingering briefly. The warmth of his skin was a reminder of their recent connection.
Taking a deep breath, she tried to steady her thoughts. Brighid felt apprehensive yet curious about what Rex wanted to discuss and what the kiss meant. There was a flutter of anticipation mingled with a hint of fear.
Finally, she turned around. Her voice was calm but carried an undertone of unresolved feelings.
"Alright," she said softly but firmly, "lead the way." Her words conveyed a quiet resolve, ready to face the conversation ahead, aware it might change everything.
